Striking images preserve a memorable portrait of small town
A Portrait Of Missouri: 1935-1943 by Paul E. Parker (Professor of Political Science, Truman State University, Kirksville, Missouri) is an impressive and evocative collection of black-and-white photographs drawn from the historical archives of the Farm Security Administration. Documenting the impoverished farm economy during the Great Depression as well as part of the World War II era, these striking images preserve a memorable portrait of small town and rural history itself. The extensive, informative, scholarly text places the photographs within their historical context and complements this superb and highly recommended photographic gallery.

I have an original copy of this classic. Not a photo-copy. NOT much else of Americana as spectacular.

Rand McNally Chicago Map Guide (Mapguide)
Published in Map by Rand McNally & Co (May, 1997)
Author: Rand McNally & Company
Average review score:

Love this map. Has what I want to see. Very Durable.
This is the best map of Chicago that I've found for driving purposes. Its laminated surface keeps it nice, even through the rough treatment it gets in the car. And yet it is foldable, so I don't have to have a huge map open in front of me. This map covers more area than the other laminated's that I've found. In fact, it seems so popular, that I can't find it in any of the bookstores in Chicago. Thank goodness for Amazon.com.

Madison, Wisconsin City Map
as a newcomer to the madison, wi area, this map has proven invaluable to me in finding my way around. it is up to date, accurate, easy to use, and most of all....DURABLE. this map is laminated in such a way that you can fold it to expose any given area of the city. you can also mark on it with dry erase markers to mark spots of particular interest. there is a road index to help find where your going (or where you are!) and lots of inset maps of outlying areas of interest. i would recommend one of these city maps wherever you are.

Reflecting a Prairie Town: A Year in Peterson (American Land and Life)
Published in Hardcover by University of Iowa Press (September, 1994)
Authors: Drake Hokanson, D. Hook, and Wayne Franklin
Average review score:

Reflecting a Prairie Town-A Year in Peterson
Very informative not only in the happenings of a year in and around the town of Peterson, but also an in-depth and easy to understand history of the area begining with the formation of the land during the glacial age. The black & white photos rival the quality of Ansel Adams. This book is more than just and excellent coffee table print. This could be any midwest farming community.

Authors: Kurt Leib and Steve Butterman
Average review score:

Beuatiful Scenery!
I have ridden one of these rides, and found it to be a very pleasant ride. Nice scenery, little traffic, and great flat straightways mixed with some hills (which my riding partner had trouble with). It was by far the best ride I have been on this season. Cyclists who have been waiting for a book of Ohio/Midwest rides should definately put this book on their list.

River Stories: A Collection of Essays on Living Out
Published in Paperback by Cloquet River Press (June, 2002)
Author: Mark Munger
Average review score:

Reading River Stories like visiting a favorite neighbor
River Stories is a timeless and universally appealing collection of articles. Although the writings are set in Northeastern Minnesota and reveal personal feelings of the author and his family, they can be easily sensed and understood by a person not familiar with this particular geographical location. Just as a person does not have to live in Hannibal, Missouri, to appreciate Mark Twain's writings, the reader residing outside of the Arrowhead of Minnesota can certainly enjoy this collection. These stories are comforting and pleasant to read. Unconsciously, the reader is drawn to the author and his family, as well as the land and the life along the river that they love. Reading the stories is visiting a friendly neighbor and his family in their home. The stories are well written and enjoyable to read, and the "down-home" folks in River Stories leave the reader with a comfortable smile on his face.
